THE BRIEFING
COULD AI HELP SEE MORE WOMEN IN THE FINSERV WORKFORCE?
A joint paper by Nationwide, Bain & Company and Cambridge Judge Business School warns that the rapid deployment of AI poses a disproportionate risk to women in financial services – but also offers a strategic opportunity to reset systemic imbalances. While women make up 42 % of the sector’ s workforce, they hold just 36 % of leadership roles and a mere 8 % of FTSE 350 CEO positions. As automation accelerates, this gap risks widening: in high-earning countries, female roles face a 9.6 % automation risk compared to just 3.5 % for men, a vulnerability compounded by women showing greater hesitancy toward informal Gen AI adoption. For finance executives, bridging this gap is a governance imperative. By moving beyond passive tech adoption and standardising objective, auditable AI frameworks for recruitment and promotion, leadership can prevent algorithmic bias and actively surface overlooked female talent into core architect and governance roles.
