WEARING TWO HATS
Shutterstock CEO Paul Hennessy has resigned from his executive position and board seat, effective immediately. Following his unexpected departure on July 12, the company’ s board appointed CFO Rik Powell as interim CEO. Rik will maintain his dual responsibilities as both the finance chief and head of the enterprise during the formal search for a permanent successor. The sudden executive vacancy follows the collapse of Shutterstock’ s proposed US $ 3.7bn merger with its prominent industry rival, Getty Images. The deal dissolved in June after the UK’ s competition regulator demanded antitrust concessions, specifically the divestment of Shutterstock’ s editorial division. Notably, Rik possesses direct competitive insight, having previously served as the CFO of Getty Images for three years prior to joining Shutterstock in November 2024. The board has retained a strategic adviser to help restructure corporate operations and chart a path forward independently.
